my food sensitivity results!

Happy Friday y’all! If you’ve been around the blog long, you know I’ve become a huge advocate for anti-inflammatory diets, but exactly what can trigger those inflammatory responses can differ from person to person. I already had some suspicions about what foods trigger a response for me, but I wanted to put those suspicions to the test!

Ever since I heard of EverlyWell and their food sensitivity test, I have been itching to do it. I am such a little nerd when it comes to knowing what what’s going on in my body, so I couldn’t help myself from purchasing a kit as soon as I could get one.

If you haven’t heard of EverlyWell before, they provide a selection of physician-approved home health tests that range from general wellness, weight management, women’s health, and more. Right now the only test I knew I had to get my hands on was the food sensitivity test, mostly because I’m sure to have my other general health concerns checked at my annual physical.

The food sensitivity test checks for sensitivities for 96 different foods by testing IgG reactivity (they have an expansion kit too that tests another 88 foods and you better believe I’ve shamelessly ordered it already!) Since starting Arbonne + switching over to a flexitarian diet, I know it’s important to eliminate foods that could be triggering an inflammatory response in my body for the sake of feeling my best + decreasing risk of disease. What I loved was that I could use my flexible spending account to purchase my kit, so I could use money I’ve already set aside for medical expenses.

They give you everything you need to do the test in a sterile manner while in the comfort of your own home. This particular test did require a finger prick – I’d be lying if I said it didn’t take me about 2 weeks to finally get the nerve up to prick myself. I will say, though, that it didn’t hurt nearly as bad as I expected it too – and that’s coming from someone who despises needles. It comes with:

  • Lancets
  • Blood collection card
  • Alcohol swab
  • Gauze + bandages
  • Biohazard bag
  • Prepared shipping bag

The hardest part is literally getting your finger pricked. Once you’ve completed the collection card, you just pop it in the biohazard bag, put it in the box you received the test in, and put the box in the pre-paid envelope they provide for you. It arrives at the lab within a couple of days – when you register your kit you can choose to receive text updates so you know when your kit has arrived, when they start working on it, and when they’ve finished your labs!


The highest reactivity I had was mild, which is a blessing but also a little surprising. I figured I would have a couple that were a bit higher, but overall I really can’t complain. I’m not shocked that gluten made the list, however I use almonds almost daily in my smoothies + protein shakes so when I saw I have even a mild reactivity to them, I was genuinely surprised. I was also intrigued when I saw watermelon made the list too – who knew!

I already knew gluten/grains tend to be touchy for me since I’ve been able to tie my breakouts + joint pain to it, but I’m not surprised that I came back as reactive to the whole dairy category. I don’t usually breakout with dairy consumption (that I’ve noticed, at least) but I know in general it tends to lead to joint pain + bloating for me.

It’s good to have this information even if nothing came back as highly reactive – I think making changes where I can will help me feel that much better.

Even if there wasn’t anything drastic to find, this test was still really fun to do and I would definitely recommend it for anyone who feels like they might be struggling with bloating, joint pain, headaches, or anything else that might indicate any possible food sensitivities.
